7 Ways to Promote Healthy Aging

Health is always important. However, as we grow older, it becomes even more important to develop healthy habits to keep our physical, mental, social and financial health in good shape.

Many of us, as we grow older, tend to focus on the health and well-being of others, such as our children, grandchildren or even our parents. However, we can’t share with others a resource that we lack ourselves. This month is a time to take a step back and focus on YOU. What do you need to stay healthy for many years to come?

The answer is: participating in Healthy Aging Month! September is the time to inspire and educate adults, especially ages 45-plus, to make simple, healthy changes now that will benefit them in the future.

Here are seven ways to make the most out of Healthy Aging Month:

  1. Keep a positive attitude – Continue to focus on the positive things in life. Take hold of any problems and address them properly and quickly, if possible. Did you know, research shows that people who smile more often are happier? Show off that smile every day!
  2. Move your body – Slowly begin to incorporate a workout routine into your everyday schedule. Walk for 15 to 20 minutes around the neighborhood, try senior yoga, mow the lawn or start a garden! Even dancing in the kitchen will suffice. Moving your body releases endorphins and gives you energy!
  3. Eat healthy meals – We are not suggesting that you have to try the latest new diet or eliminate your favorite foods. However, it is important to limit portion sizes, eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and drink 6-8 glasses of water per day. As we age, our metabolism slows down. Overeating can cause obesity, which can lead to bigger health concerns such as diabetes or heart disease.
  4. Keep your mind fresh – Start a new hobby! Working on puzzles, reading books, learning a new instrument or taking an art class can keep your mind active which may help prevent cognitive decline. Read more about keeping your mind sharp here.
  5. Volunteer – Volunteering is perfect for keeping up on your social skills and improving your mental health, as it counteracts the effects of stress, anger and anxiety. This is also your opportunity to give back to the community that you live in and know that you are making a difference. Tip: Volunteer at a school or daycare, where you can stay in touch with young people and the current trends!
  6. Travel – Although traveling is limited right now, make plans in the future to travel to places you have never been. This doesn’t mean you have to get on an airplane either. How about traveling to the city next to yours? Traveling is a great way to experience new things and meet new people! So, travel in a way that’s best for you.  Get planning!
